KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash. – Kittitas Valley Fire & Rescue Captain Joe Delvo is retiring after almost 20 years with KVFR and over 31 years in fire service.

Delvo started in fire service in June 1985 with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. He held multiple positions throughout his years with the DNR and spent countless hours fighting wildfires around the state.

He worked for Cascade Ambulance from 1992 to 1994 after obtaining his EMT certification and spent off-seasons responding to medical calls.

In 2001, Delvo joined KVFR as a volunteer firefighter until being hired as its training officer in 2004.

Delvo taught KVFR how to fight wildfires as they became more common in the region. He developed the district’s volunteer recruit class, constructed the KVFR training facility and helped in acquiring the district’s brush trucks and water tenders.

Delvo transitioned to being the Prevention Captain, Fire Investigator and Fire Marshal/Fire Code Official for the City of Ellensburg in 2020. His retirement date is set for Dec. 31.
