OLYMPIA, Wash.-The clothes dryer is a modern appliance that we tend to take for granted in our daily lives, but the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding Washingtonians of the importance of proper dryer upkeep to prevent fires.

The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is the failure to clean them according to the National Fire Protection Association. The buildup of lint in the dryer vent and improper venting from the dryer to the outside of your home can cause fires.

Taking a few moments before loading your dryer, as well as some preventive maintenance throughout the year, can keep your dryer running smoothly and reduce the possibility of fire.

Dryer fire safety tips from the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office:

Clean the lint filter on your dryer before each load of laundry.Keep the dryer drum free of lint or any other dirt or debris.Clean the vent pipe quarterly.Make sure the air vent exhaust pipe is not blocked outside your home.Turn your dryer off when you leave home or go to bed.Do not overload your dryer.
