YAKIMA, Wash.-Every 60 seconds someone gets burned seriously enough to require medical treatment, according to the American Burn Association.

The first full week in Feb. is National Burn Awareness Week, a time dedicated to burn and fire safety and prevention.

This year Burn Awareness Week runs Feb. 4-10 and the Yakima Fire Department is reminding everyone to keep an eye on what they fry in the kitchen.

According to the YFD, cooking on the stove top demands full attention, especially when using highly flammable cooking oil.

Free resources, including children’s “hot or not” activity sheets and other fire safety tips through the National Fire Protection Association.
