Well owners in Umatilla, Morrow Counties eligible for free nitrate testing

UMATILLA, Ore.-Private well owners in Umatilla and Morrow Counties are eligible for free water testing to know the risk of exposure to nitrates and other contaminants.

Residents who get their water from wells can get free tests, treatments and bottled water delivered from the Oregon Health Authority, if their well water tests high for nitrates.

According to the Oregon Health Authority, high nitrate levels in water can pose serious health risks, especially for pregnant people and babies. High nitrate levels are considered any level above 10 milligrams per liter of water.

The only way to know if your drinking water has high nitrate levels is to test and the OHA is offering free tests for residents who use their well water for drinking, bathing, cooking and washing.

How to quality for free well water testing:

Well must be in the Lower Umatilla Basin Groundwater Management Area (LUBGMWA) of Morrow and Umatilla Counties.Residents must use well water for drinking, bathing, cooking and washing dishes.The well is not part of a public water system.
