Bird flu reported in Kittitas County flock

OLYMPIA, Wash.- Washington state veterinarians have confirmed that a Kittitas County domestic flock has been infected with bird flu.

The WSDA avian health team responded after the owner of a domestic flock in Kittitas County reported several bird deaths, and test results came back positive for avian influenza.

Domestic flock owners are encouraged to report sick or dead birds online by the WSDA.

“With fall migration ramping up, we expect to see an increase in sporadic detections across the state,” said Washington State Veterinarian Dr. Amber Itle. “This risk will persist for many months as some impacted waterfowl species overwinter in our state.”

The WSDA is encouraging flock owners to take measures such as proper cleaning and disinfection and covering coops to protect them from waterfowl introductions of the virus.

The WSDA has several resources for flock owners including a bird flu webpage, an interactive map, and a Facebook group.
