State revokes certificate of Toppenish teacher investigated for sexual misconduct

TOPPENISH, Wash.-The teaching license of John Cerna has been revoked by the State of Washington.

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction revoked Cerna’s teaching certificate on Nov. 30, 2023, according to documents from the Admissions and Professional Conduct Advisory Committee.

Cerna worked as an Assistant Principal, English teacher and wrestling coach at Toppenish High School, he and his wife were accused of providing drugs and alcohol to students and for inappropriate sexual contact with students.

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, Toppenish School District and, ultimately the state of Washington investigated the allegations.

The Cernas were placed on administrative leave in 2021 and Cerna’s father, the Toppenish Schools Superintendent was also placed on non-disciplinary leave during the investigation.

Bertha Cerna was ultimately charged with sexual misconduct and supplying alcohol to a minor. She was arrested in Orange County in August of 2022 and died in custody on June. 8, 2023.
