WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Biden Administration released new Title IX rules to expand protections for LGBTQ+ students on April 19.

Under the revisions, the rights of LGBTQ+ students will now be protected under federal law and victims of sexual assaults on campus will be guaranteed expanded safeguards.

U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), former chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, led the comment letter on the draft of the new Title IX rule and issued the following statement after its announcement.

“This is a huge step forward for students, survivors, and everyone who understands the paramount importance of making sure schools are free from all forms of sex-based discrimination and harassment.

At a time when we’re seeing an alarming rise in violence against transgender people, this rule explicitly clarifies that Title IX protects LGBTQ+ students and employees from unfair treatment and discrimination.

The Biden administration’s new rule is a victory for women and girls, the LGBTQ+ community, and students everywhere—college campuses and schools will be more fair, safer, and more transparent thanks to the leadership of the Biden administration.”
