YPD officer investigated for second shooting in a year

YAKIMA, Wash.-The Yakima Police Department has released the name of the officer involved in a recent shooting.

According to the YPD, officer Alam Martinez, a three-year veteran of the YPD, was involved in the shooting on the morning of March 14 and is on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.

Officer Martinez chased a suspect who ran from a stolen car through an apartment complex in the area of Thorton Lane and Buwalda Lane, fired his gun and hit the suspect multiple times, according to the YPD.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after the shooting.

The Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting and the YPD is also investigating whether Officer Martinez’s actions were within YPD’s policies and procedures.

Officer Martinez was one of three YPD officers previously investigated following an officer-involved shooting on May 3. 2023, in which a suspect with a shotgun was shot and killed.
