OLYMPIA, Wash.-A new mural in Yakima that honors the restoration of voting rights for Washingtonians with past felony convictions will be unveiled on Saturday, September 23.

“Free the Vote” murals in Tacoma, Spokane and Yakima hope to raise awareness of the restoration of voting rights for people convicted of felonies who are not serving a sentence of total confinement according to the Office of Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs.

The right to register and vote for Washington residents previously convicted of a felony was guaranteed with the passage of House Bill 1078 in 2021.

Community events are scheduled to celebrate the murals from the Secretary of State’s Office and local election offices, including voter registration drives according to a press release announcing the murals.
