WSDOT pulls off Christmas miracle, returns lost gifts

LEAVENWORTH, Wash.-Some Department of Transportation crew members recently performed a Christmas miracle for a grandfather who lost his grandchildren’s Christmas gifts.

According to WSDOT, two members of the Leavenworth shed crew found what they thought was a bag of garbage on US 2 near the Big Y east of Leavenworth on Christmas Eve only to discover the bag was full of Christmas gifts.

Devitt Kane and Eric Remey, members of the Highway Maintenance Crew, posted about their find on a local Leavenworth facebook group, hoping to connect with whoever lost it.

“It’s almost always a big bag of garbage, so it was quite a surprise,” said Kane of finding the Christmas surprise.

When someone in another group posted about lost presents the online community came together and started linking the pieces of the holiday puzzle together, according to WSDOT.

Finally, the sister of David Carlisle, who realized he’d lost the presents when he got to his destination, made connections and arranged for the gifts to be returned.

Around 1 a.m. on Christmas morning, WSDOT’s Maddie Hillard returned the gifts to Carlisle on the summit of Stevens Pass.

“It felt like something out of a Hallmark movie,” said Hillard of the Christmas miracle.
