Wrong-way driver causes head-on collision on I-84, OSP emphasizes holiday safety

I-84, Ore. — A wrong-way crash closed I-84 for nearly four hours on Dec. 19.

According to the Oregon State Patrol, a wrong-way driver hit another car head-on near milepost 51. While on their way to another call, OSP SWAT stopped at the crash scene and performed life-saving measures on the wrong-way driver.

OSP said the driver was taken to a local hospital and charged with DUI, reckless driving and reckless endangering. No one else was injured in the crash.

This accident happened as OSP prepare to reduce and prevent Fatal 5-related accidents during the holidays. Fatal 5 accidents include speeding, intoxication (drugs and/or alcohol), failure to wear a seat belt, lane usage and distraction.

As the holidays approach, OSP reminds drivers the following driver safety:

Never drink and drive.Don’t let someone who has been drinking get behind the wheel.If you’re hosting, ensure everyone has a sober ride home.Call 911 if you see a drunk driver.
