TRI-CITIES, Wash. – According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Thorson there were two DUI’s and zero crashes on New Year’s Eve in the Tri-Cities.

Thorson said these numbers are fairly low and it was generally a safe New Year’s Eve.

“New Year’s Eve ironically is one of the safest weekends because people think that this is the one night that ‘I’m not gonna get behind the wheel, I’m gonna use an Uber, Lyft, friends, family’ it’s great, it’s what we want to see but if we could continue that you know through all big holidays, that would be great,” Trooper Thorson said.

Comparing past New Year’s Eve to 2023, in 2021 there were zero DUI’s and 19 crashes. According to the National Weather Service, in 2021 there was about an inch of snow on New Year’s Eve and Thorson said the snow increases the amount of crashes.

In 2022 there were two DUI arrests and five crashes. The data backs Trooper Thorson up by showing that 2023 had the best numbers out of the last three years.
