WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Walla Walla Balloon Stampede is back for its 48th year with multiple balloons covering the sky.

The first flights took off from Tietan Park in Walla Walla for Kids’ Day on May 9. The balloon pilots offered free tethered rides to kids. According to the event’s emcee, the balloons rose around thirty feet in the air.

The celebration continues through the weekend. Friday all balloons take to the sky at 5:30 in the morning. The launch includes VIPs and sponsors.

The night glow celebration is set to get underway at 5 p.m. and at 8:45, balloons will light up the night sky.

Saturday is a competition for balloon pilots sponsored by Amerigas Propane, with all balloons expected to take to the air.

This is a free event, and tickets are not required to view the balloon flight.

Sunday features a Founders Day quiet launch. There will be no music or announcers, just a moment to honor the first pilots who launched in the Walla Walla wheat fields.

According to the event organizers, food is new this year. Multiple food trucks will be on-site, offering patrons something to eat.
