AUSTIN, TX.-Tesla is voluntarily recalling over two million cars after a recent investigation into its autopilot safety system.

The recall covers the 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y equipped with Autosteer. According to NBC News reporting on the recall by Marlene Lenthang, the two million cars being recalled is almost all of the Tesla’s owned in America.

According to Tesla, Autosteer maintains a set speed or a set following distance, and detects lane markings and the presence of other vehicles, however, drivers should keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation spurred the recall after reviewing almost 1,000 crashes dating back to 2021 where autopilot was allegedly used, according to NBC News.

According to the recall notice issued by Tesla, “in certain circumstances when Autosteer is engaged, the prominence and scope of the feature’s controls may not be sufficient to prevent driver misuse.”

On Dec. 5 Tesla agreed to voluntarily recall all affected cars. Tesla owners will be notified of the recall by mail and will receive a free software update to address the autopilot issue.

The update will reportedly “incorporate additional controls and alerts” into the autosteer system, according to Tesla.
