YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. – State regulators have approved $176,467 in grants from the Grade Crossing Protective Fund to enhance safety at eight railroad crossings in Yakima County.

Yak Rail LLC will use the funds to install new motion detector controllers known as PMD-4s, Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission said in a release.

These devices detect approaching trains and activate warning lights, gates and bells, improving the system’s reliability and public safety.

The Grade Crossing Protective Fund was established in 1969 to support safety measures that reduce accidents and fatalities at crossings and along railroad rights-of-way.
