ZILLAH, Wash. – A free running and walking event to honor fallen soldiers from the Yakima Valley and Yakama Nation is set for May 11 in Zillah.

The City of Zillah is hosting its second annual 5K for the Fallen. Participants will come together to run and walk as a living memorial for 15 soldiers across the region who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Tribute posters will be put up along the route as well.

“We are excited to create this meaningful event to honor our fallen service members through active remembrance, which will take place along our recently completed Vintage Valley Parkway,” said City Administrator Michael Grayum. “The event is free and open to all ages and abilities, including runners, walkers, rollers, and strollers.”

Registration, which can be done online, starts at 7 a.m. at 1005 Vintage Valley Pkwy. A Circle of Remembrance is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. followed by a 21 gun salute and taps from the Yakama Warriors at 7:55 a.m. The run starts at 8 a.m.

Following the run, participants are invited to a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club at 9 a.m. Carnival rides, food vendors, a beer garden, live music and fireworks will also take place all day and into the evening at the nearby Zillah Community Days festivities.
