PASCO, Wash. – The Port of Pasco is making a significant shift from at-large to by-district elections, a move designed to enhance representation in the voting process. This change will impact the way elections are conducted, offering a more localized approach to governance.
The Port of Pasco oversees vital business and transportation hubs, including the Tri-Cities Airport, which plays a crucial role in regional travel and commerce. This change aims to ensure that the diverse voices within the community have a more direct impact on decision-making.
The first election under this new system is set to take place next year. The transition is not driven by partisan interests, but rather a focus on empowering voters.
“We just want people to have the right to vote,” Gustavo Gutierrez Gomez, a Tri-cities LULAC member, said. “The Port of Pasco is very important to us because of the economic power it has in our community.”
This move is expected to bring more equitable representation and influence to the local population.
