One dead after car vs. semi crash near Zillah, westbound I-82 temporarily blocked

ZILLAH, Wash. – One person is dead after a car versus semi crash causing the westbound lanes of I-82 to temporarily close.

The crash in the westbound lane of I-82 near milepost 47 near Zillah happened around 1:50 p.m., and one person is confirmed to have died in the crash, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Chris Thorson.

A press memo from WSP says a 57-year-old driver from Yakima was heading eastbound when he crossed into the median and hit the semi driving westbound.

WSP is withholding the name of driver that was killed due to next-of-kin not yet being notified.

The westbound lanes of I-82 were closed at milepost 50 near Toppenish for multiple hours, according to the Department of Transportation. Traffic was being detoured onto SR 22 and US 97.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to WSP.
