Missoula County pushes back reopening of Maclay Bridge after inspection

MISSOULA, Mont. – Missoula County is now planning to reopen Maclay Bridge by the second week of June, though the original goal was to be reopened by May 10.

Missoula County announced that the reopening date for Maclay Bridge will be pushed back, following an inspection on Wednesday morning that concluded additional repairs are required.

According to Missoula County’s thread posted on X, the site formerly known as Twitter, the engineering firm HDR conducted the inspection on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, and they determined further repairs are necessary for the bridge deck to be safe.

With this new information, Public Works officials are now aiming for the bridge to reopen by the second week of June, as continued repairs are needed, new materials will have to be delivered, and the County may need to conduct another inspection and a weight-limit review.

“Once all required structural repairs are complete, crews will install the driving surface, which includes pouring concrete that requires a seven-day cure time before the final asphalt surfacing can be placed,” the thread said.

The bridge will remain closed to all traffic, including bicycles and pedestrians, until repairs are complete and the County deems the bridge safe. “County officials urge members of the public to abide by this closure,” the thread said. Missoula County Public Works originally hoped the bridge could be reopened by May 9 or May 10.

We will update you as the construction of Maclay Bridge continues.
