A lifeboat crew scrambled to save a struggling kite surfer – only for the ‘casualty’ to be a Baby Yoda balloon.

The RNLI Craster Lifeboat was called out at 6 pm on Monday (8/4) after walkers spotted what they thought was a body floating in the sea.

The volunteer crew frantically searched the area around Embleton Bay in Northumberland for the stranded kite surfer.

When the D Class boat arrived at the scene its four-man crew were left chuckling after finding the surfer was in fact a life-size Baby Yoda balloon.

The foil balloon features the character Grogu from the hit Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian, but he’s affectionately known as Baby Yoda.

An RNLI spokesperson said: “Yoda was deflated and the force one wind helped the volunteer crew safely back to Craster.

“Howick Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to Embleton Bay.

“Craster lifeboat D839 James Ballard returned to Craster lifeboat station and was refueled and prepared for service.

“The First informant did the correct thing by calling 999 and asking for the Coastguard, as this could have quite easily been a kite surfer.

“The charity advises that if you find yourself or anyone in trouble in the water to dial 999 or 112 from a mobile phone and ask for the Coastguard.”
