Know someone in an abusive relationship? Here’s how you can help

KENNEWICK, WA. – According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four women will experience an abusive relationship in their lifetime.

What should friends and family members do if they feel a loved one may be in an unsafe relationship?

If you are unsure about how and if you should talk to the victim, call a local or national domestic violence hotline. They will be able to help answer any questions you might have.

The Support, Advocacy and Resource Center (SARC) says that patience will be key when dealing with a potential abuse victim. According to SARC Executive Director JoDee Garretson, victims will often feel very alone and isolated.

“Often abusers really try to isolate victims and try to intervene in relationships so they don’t have other support,” said Garretson.

Garretson also stresses the importance of making sure the victim understands it is not their fault.

“It’s important to remember that the offenders are still the ones accountable to what they did and what their choices are,” said Garretson.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, you can contact any domestic violence hotline for free. These services are also fully confidential.

The National Domestic Violence hotline is available 24/7 at 800-799-7233

SARC can be contacted 24/7 at 509-374-5391. If you are in immediate danger call 911.
