CINCINNATI, OH.-Johnson & Johnson announced plans to pay $6.5 billion to settle lawsuits alleging its talc-based products caused ovarian cancer.

The settlement plan announced on May 1 would settle thousands of lawsuits that have caused decades of financial and public relations problems for the company and would be paid out over the course of 25 years, according to J&J.

According to NBC News reporting, the settlement must be approved by at least 75 percent of claimants over the next three months to officially end the legal battles and prevent future lawsuits.
