SEATTLE, Wash.-Washington State ranked fourth in the nation for car thefts by volume in 2023.

Car thefts rose nationwide last year, according to The National Insurance Crime Bureau’s (NICB) 2023 Vehicle Theft Trends report.

Washington bucked the national trend, seeing an eight percent drop in car thefts in 2023, however the Evergreen State remained fourth overall for theft by volume.

According to the NWICB, 43,160 vehicles were stolen in Washington in 2023 compared to 47,113 in 2022.

“It is encouraging news that fewer vehicles were stolen in Washington in 2023 than in 2022, but even so, auto theft remains a significant problem in the Northwest,” said NW Insurance Council President Kenton Brine.

Drivers can help protect themselves in the case of car theft by considering optional comprehensive insurance coverage, rather than just collision insurance, according to the NWICB.
