Injured snowmobilers rescued in Kittitas County

KITTITAS COUNTY, Wash.-Two snowmobilers were rescued after going over a 50-food embankment in the Cooper Lake area on Feb. 18.

Kittcom first received reports of SOS signals from a GPS device in the area at about 11:51 a.m.

According to a social media post from the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, a snowmobiler came across the injured pair of snowmobilers after they went off the embankment into a woody area below.

Kittitas County Search and Rescue responded to the area on ground and by snowmobile and Kittitas County Fire Protection Districts #6 and #7 assisted with a high-angle rope rescue team. Snoqualmie Pass Ski Patrol also assisted.

One of the injured snowmobilers made it up the hill with the help of a passerby and the rescue teams made it to the area around 1 p.m. and a litter carried the more seriously injured victim out of the area.

According to the KCSO, the snowmobilers were a husband and wife from Auburn, both of whom are 52-years-old.

The woman was airlifted to the hospital in Wenatchee and the husband was transported to the hospital in Yakima.

The Kittitas County Search and Rescue ORV Team is also looking for volunteers.

The mission of the KCSO ORV Team is is to provide Search and Rescue coordinators and mission planners with an off road vehicle option that can negotiate terrain conventional vehicles cannot, according to the KCSO.

The team provides search capability, search area containment, logistical and staging support, traffic control, transportation and more.
