Five Hermiston middle schoolers finalists for national broadcast story of the year

HERMISTON, Ore.- Five Students from Armand Larive Middle School were named as finalists for the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) 2023 Broadcast Story of the Year competition for middle and high school students.

NSPA holds the annual middle school-level contests in the spring. The story is selected to be finalists based on criteria like camera work, audio quality storytelling, and interviewing skills.

Winners from the finalist round will be announced at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Boston, Mass. On Saturday, November 4.

Brooklin Bacon Avery Devin Sofia Rodriguez and Kylie Virgil were nominated for their story “Human Bean” about a coffee shop being built in Hermiston.

Jakoby Rodriguez was also recognized for his story “What got them into coaching?” about the Hermiston High School girls’ basketball coaches.
