KENNEWICK, Wash. – UPDATE Jan. 25

The Kennewick Fire Department released more information about garage fire in a press release.

The press release says the fire was fought on the 9100 block of West Yellowstone Avenue by KFD, Benton County Fire District 1, Benton County Fire District 4 and Richland Fire and Emergency Services.

RFD was the first to the fire, reporting a heavy fire in a garage with flames hitting an adjacent building just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews found that the nearby home was evacuated and that the fire had not spread inside. Crews then went to work on the fire, controlling it in 22 minutes.

The press release says the garage and its contents were fully lost. Crews reportedly stayed at the garage to put out hot spots for another two hours.

The Kennewick Police Department provided scene safety while the Kennewick Public Utility District cut off power to the garage. Cascade Natural Gas also confirmed that there were no gas lines on the property.

The cause is still undetermined, however is possibly electricity-related.

KFD says the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that portable heaters can cause fires if placed too close to flammable materials like drapes, furniture and bedding. It recommends a distance of three feet from these materials and to plug heaters into wall outlets and never into power strips or extension cords.

UPDATE 9:02 p.m.

All Kennewick Fire Department crews have been cleared from the fire, according to Deputy Chief Michael Heffner.

Heffner says there were no injuries due to the fire. The fire was contained to the detached garage, apart from mild charring of a nearby home.

KFD is investigating the fire and will continue the investigation Thursday morning.

The nearby house is habitable, according to Heffner.

UPDATE 5:57 p.m.
