Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing a new round of scrutiny over a proposal to eliminate federal funding for the Special Olympics.

Senate Democrats pressed DeVos on the issue Thursday during a hearing on her 2020 budget proposal, which calls for eliminating $17.6 million in Special Olympics funding.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois asked if DeVos personally approved the cut. He says “someone has to accept responsibility.”

DeVos says she didn’t “didn’t personally get involved” in the decision. She fired back at Durbin, saying “Let’s not use disabled children in a twisted way for your political narrative.”

The proposed cut generated a wave of criticism from advocates and celebrities.

Other Democrats grilled DeVos’ handling of for-profit colleges. They say she’s failed to help borrowers who were cheated by their schools.
