GRANDVIEW, Wash.- Washington Department of Ecology evaluated cleaning systems at Smucker’s fruit processing facility in Grandview.

This evaluation is part of the Department of Ecology’s pollution prevention technical assistance program.

According to the Department of Ecology, the evaluation will help develop cleaning systems designs that will save $7,700 in annual costs from improved operational efficiency.

The new systems will also reduce the use of sodium hydroxide by 20,000 pounds per year. sodium hydroxide is a caustic and toxic chemical.

And it will save an estimated 2,500 gallons of water per day.

“The Ecology team was able to secure a grant to get these specialized water meters, clamp-on water meters, that we can use to measure water usage,” said Sarah Mothershead, Quality Assurance Manager for J.M. Smucker Company.
