Creator of immensely popular Dragon Ball series dead at 68

TOKYO, JP. – The creator of the immensely popular ‘Dragon Ball’ series, Akira Toriyama, died on March 1 at 68 from an acute subdural hematoma, according to Dragon Ball on social media.

Toriyama wrote for over 45 years before his passing and was in the middle of creating several more works, according to a statement from Bird Studio.

A funeral service for Toriyama was held with his family. A gathering to commemorate his life is not yet scheduled.

Toriyama’s most famous work was creating Dragon Ball, however he also created the highly successful manga series ‘Dr. Slump’ and designed characters for several popular video games like ‘Dragon Quest,’ ‘Chrono Trigger’ and ‘Blue Dragon.’

Prior to creating Dragon Ball, Toriyama would win the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1981 for creating the science fiction-comedy manga Dr. Slump.

He is survived by his wife Yoshimi Katō and two children.
