Coroner determines cause of death of inmate at Yakima County Jail

YAKIMA, Wash. – UPDATE NOV. 29, 11:36 a.m.

According to Yakima County Coroner, Jim Curtice, during a minor confrontation with Correctional Staff, Hien Trung Hua suffered a medical emergency.

The cause of death was identified as Cardiac Dysrhythmia secondary to Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease and the manner of death was determined as accidental.

This incident remains under investigation of the Yakima Valley Special Investigative Unit.

An in-custody death at the Yakima County Jail is being investigated by the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit.

The YVSIU was notified of the death of an adult male at the jail on the morning of Friday, Nov. 24.

According to Yakima County Coroner Jim Curtice, the man who died was 41-year-old Hien Trung Hua.

Hua suffered a medical emergency while “in contact” with a Corrections Officer at the jail, according to the YVSIU. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the circumstances of the death are now under investigation.

Hua was charged with fourth-degree assault at the time of his death, according to court records. He had a prior conviction for third-degree assault in 2005.

Hua’s family was notified and the Yakima County Coroner’s Office said it’s working to schedule an autopsy.

Hua is the third inmate to die at the jail this year.
