Coast Guard publishes review of its workplace culture, climate

WASHINGTON, D.C.-The United States Coast Guard published its Accountability and Transparency Review report on workplace culture and climate on Dec. 6.

According to the Coast Guard, the report is the result of a 90-day review that analyzed current law, policy, processes, practices, resources and Service culture relevant to preventing and responding to sexual assault, harassment and other harmful behaviors in the Coast Guard.

The ATR was compiled by a team of military and civilian members who met with members of the Coast Guard around the country to learn about their workplace experience and culture.

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda Fagan issued a memorandum with the report that detailed 33 initial actions to address recommendations.

“The Accountability and Transparency Review report makes clear that Service change is necessary,” said Commandant Fagan. “We must drive meaningful change, consistent with our core values of honor, respect, and devotion to duty, to create an environment where every Coast Guard member feels safe and valued.”

According to a Coast Guard press release on the ATR, the Commandant’s recommendations, include:

Improvement to workforce training, culture and development.Creation of an Integrated Primary Prevention Program modeled after the Department of Defense program.Incorporating core values more thoroughly in communications and evaluations.Implementation of policies to ensure accountability related to sexual assault, sexual harassment, and other harmful behaviors.Better oversight and accountability at the Coast Guard Academy.Improved transparency and access to workforce climate data and resources.
