Clover Island to be presented a Governor’s Smart Communities Award

KENNEWICK, Wash.-Clover Island and its partners will be presented a Smart Communities Award from the Governor’s Office on Tuesday, March. 12 at the Clover Island Lighthouse Plaza at 11:30 a.m.

The Port of Kennewick and its partners won in the Smart Partnerships category for their efforts to restore and revitalize Clover Island.

“The partners are honored to receive the Governor’s Smart Communities Smart Partnerships Award and proud to have been chosen from an impressive body of work submitted by local governments around the state,” said Port of Kennewick Chief Executive Officer, Tim Arntzen.”

The restoration project, started in 2008, transitioned the island’s shoreline from concrete to sustainable habitat, built the lighthouse, added artwork and benches, restrooms and viewpoints, according to the Port.

The public is invited to the ceremony and will feature a blessing from the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and a representative from the Governor’s Office will present the award to the Port, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the CTUIR, Benton County and the City of Kennewick, according to a press release on the awards.
