City of Zillah sets target date for lifting boil water advisory

ZILLAH, Wash. – The City of Zillah has set a target date for lifting the city’s boil water advisory following E. coli being found in the water system.

According to a press release, the City of Zillah has set November 1 to be the target date of the advisory being lifted.

The city’s Public Works Department has begun adding chlorine to the city’s water distribution system which kills E. coli in the city’s water system.

The City of Zillah notes that the chlorine may produce a slight odor as it goes through each home. The chlorine will dissipate in boiled water and is safe to drink after boiling.

Following treatment, the Public Works Department will then remove the chlorine by flushing the entire system in a 48 hour process. If samples of the water return clean of E. coli and chlorine, the boil water advisory will be lifted.

If normal use of water in your household is not occurring, the City of Zillah urges you to start flushing water through your home by taking the following steps:

Turn a faucet on in your home for approximately 5 minutesAfter 5 minutes, shut the faucet off and resume regular use, boiling water for consumption or brushing teeth (see the FAQ on the city’s website)After 48 hours, if normal use is not occurring, cycle the water again in your home for approximately 5 minutes as specified above

“Zillah has one water distribution system and one pressure zone, so contamination could reach any section of town,” said Public Works Director John Simmons. “We all must do our part to keep the water system clean and safe, especially those who connect city water to clean out their RVs and make cross-connections between their household water and their irrigation systems.”

Updates on the boil water advisory and water samples will be available on the city’s website.
