Cantaloupes, pre-cut fruit linked to salmonella outbreak

WASHINGTON-43 people are sick after astrain of salmonella has been reported in 15 states. The outbreak has hospitalized 17 people and one illness has been reported in Washington.

The patients and studies have found that the salmonella is being traced back to cantaloupes. A similar investigation in Canada has found the same strain of the disease in Malichita brand cantaloupes.

Malichita whole cantaloupes, Vinyard pre-cut cantaloupes and ALDI whole and pre-cut fruit products and cantaloupes have been recalled.

If you have purchased the products that have been recalled, do not eat them and return them to the store or throw it away. Wash surfaces and items that have come in contact with the recalled fruit with hot soapy water.

If you experience any severe Salmonella symptoms, including diarrhea and a fever over 102 degrees, vomiting or dehydration, you should call your health care provider.

Symptoms usually begin within six hours of consumption or can take up to six days to show.
