YAKIMA, Wash. – A Yakima woman charged in the shooting death of her boyfriend at a Super Bowl party will be arraigned in about two weeks.
Ann Melendrez, 27, appeared in Yakima County Court February 27, to hear the charges against her.
In court documents, investigators suspected Melendrez loaded a gun belonging to David Suarez-Hernandez, 21, and recklessly handled the gun while intoxicated, causing a bullet to fire.
Suarez-Hernandez was holding Melendrez’s one-year-old son near his shoulder when the bullet traveled through Suarez-Hernandez’s wrist, through the side of the child’s abdomen and into Suarez-Hernandez’s neck killing him, court documents said.
The child was transported to a hospital in Seattle for treatment and Melendrez was booked into jail on manslaughter, third degree assault and reckless endangerment charges.
A judge set bail at $100,000 and her arraignment for March 13 when she’ll be asked to enter a plea.
