YAKIMA, Wash. – Yakima Union Gospel Mission (YUGM) announced a strategic shift in its shelter services to tackle the changing landscape of homelessness.
These changes will roll out progressively during summer 2025, YUGM said in a release.
YUGM said it wants to provide not just shelter, but foster transformation and long-term stability, after seven years of frontline experience and data collection.
A few key adjustments include closing the day space from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except for those who are medically vulnerable or have scheduled appointments.
Additionally, outreach on North 1st Street will be reduced to focus on deeper engagement with guests seeking transformation. Other client spaces in the Adult Shelter will be evaluated to ensure safety and prevent disruptive behavior, the release said.
YUGM said it’s introducing a tiered shelter model, adding two additional low-barrier and higher-barrier options. This aims to support individuals at different stages of their journey toward stability.
