YAKIMA, Wash. – A shooting in Yakima early Sunday morning resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy and left two teenagers fighting for their lives.
The 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl are in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, according to Yakima Police Department.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of North 5th Avenue and West ‘D’ Street. Nearly 12 hours after the incident, a heavy police presence remained at the scene. On Monday, the area was quieter, but Yakima Police detectives were still canvassing the neighborhood. They were speaking to nearby properties that might have video footage to understand what led to the shooting.
A man nearby the house involved spoke off-camera, suggesting that the incident might be gang-related, potentially connected to an earlier altercation on Cherry Ave. He mentioned that the home sits between two rival gangs. However, the Yakima Police Public Information Office could not confirm whether the shooting was gang-related, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
A Flock camera, located near the shooting site, was noticed earlier Monday. These cameras only capture still images, and efforts are underway with the Yakima Police Department to determine if anything was captured during the time of the shooting.
