YAKIMA, Wash. – A 21-year-old Yakima man has been formally charged with second degree murder in the deadly shooting of a high school student early this week.
During Israel Barriga Vargas’ preliminary appearance on Tuesday, April 22 in Yakima County Court, a judge maintained bail at $500,000.
Vargas was arrested at a home on South 90th Avenue in Yakima after surrendering to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies.
The victim, identified by the Yakima County Coroner’s Office as 18-year-old Salvador Granillo, was a senior at Garfield High School in Seattle.
Court records said the shooting occurred at a party in the 1500 block of South Keys Road following a dispute that escalated after Granillo punched Vargas.
The argument began when Vargas spit in Granillo’s face during a disagreement about re-entering the party to speak with his girlfriend, court records said.
