YAKIMA, Wash. – A partnership between Yakima Valley Habitat for Humanity and West Valley High School has culminated in the completion of the “Playhouses with a Purpose” program.

This year-round initiative involved students from construction and welding classes at West Valley High building two playhouses. Teacher Stephen Matczak encouraged his students to actively participate.

“I try to encourage them to get out of their seats and let’s get to work.”

Matczak highlighted the dual purpose of the program.

“The most important aspect of this project is giving back to the community. But individually, it’s just beneficial for students to understand how to fix and repair anything,” he said.

Meloney Rosen, the executive director of Yakima Valley Habitat for Humanity, emphasized the organization’s mission.

“Our mission is to build homes, community and hope. And we truly believe that investing in our students helps us build community. So we want to support that and help to build that up,” she stated.

Rosen explained that the playhouses offer versatility.

“Most people think of playhouses for kids, but these are pretty good size and I feel like you could use that maybe for a potting shed or, you know…They’re really cute and fun. And you could use them in a variety of ways,” she added.

Matczak also noted the leadership growth he observed in his students.

“To see students come in, drop their things, know what the next phase of the build is, and just take charge. And I can just sit back and just watch. And it’s an amazing journey to see them go from, you know, not knowing how to swing a hammer to, you know, really taking the lead on projects like this,” he said.

The playhouses are now available for purchase at the Habitat’s store. Bidding can also be done online on Habitat’s website until the end of the month. All proceeds go towards the nonprofit.
