Yakima expands water access in underserved areas

YAKIMA, Wash. – Yakima has embarked on a significant project to enhance water and wastewater systems in its northeast and south central neighborhoods.

Construction in the northeast began today, June 23, 2025, and will cover streets like North 3rd and 4th. The south central area improvements are set to start on Tuesday, October 7.

Chad Redick, Water/Irrigation Engineer, emphasized the importance of the project, “Residents in these areas currently obtain their domestic water from individual private shallow wells and discharge waste to individual septic systems.”

The project, funded by a $2.2 million grant from the Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART Drought Resiliency program, is expected to be completed by February 2026. Ascent Foundation & More, LLC of Cle Elum has been awarded the contract.

To ensure minimal disruption, roads will remain open to local traffic, with traffic control devices guiding vehicles around construction zones. Temporary road closures may occur, but detours will ensure local access.

Residents will experience temporary water outages as the new system is integrated, with at least 24-hour advance notice provided.
