YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. – Safe Yakima Valley is reporting another spike in overdoses, with 11 new overdoses reported across Yakima County in the last 24 hours.
Safe Yakima Valley also reported 20 overdoses a week prior, tallying 31 in total over a few days.
Officials say that the cause of the overdose spike is carfentanil, an opioid 100 times stronger than fentanyl and 10,000 times stronger than morphine. Only a few micrograms of carfentanil can be deadly.
Safe Yakima Valley recommends those addicted to opioids to take Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) like methadone and buprenorphine to reduce cravings and support recovery, and to combine it with counseling and support services.
