Yakima Arbor Fest brings community together to celebrate nature

YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Area Arboretum hosted its 24th annual Arbor Fest, celebrating Washington’s statewide Arbor Day. The free event welcomed people of all ages to learn about the environment in a fun and engaging way.

Garrett Brenden, the arboretum’s education director for nine years, shared his thoughts on how people can celebrate Arbor Day.

“If people just go out and appreciate nature, take a walk in the woods, go to your local greenspace, your parks or arboretum, some way to just appreciate nature is a great way to celebrate Arbor Day,” Brenden said.

Several local nonprofits and government agencies participated in the event, teaching the community about the importance of nature and preservation. Brenden explained that Arbor Fest is not just about fun but also about educating people on environmental care.

“We feel like it makes a more informed citizen and someone who will take better care of this earth because, I mean, we’re only here on it for a short time, but there’s generations that come after us and we want to make sure that this land is healthy, this land is safe, and make sure that everyone is doing their best to care for this earth and care for the trees,” Brenden stated.

The event has grown in popularity over the years, with many attendees enjoying the beautiful weather.

“This event is so, so loved and fun for our community. I mean, you can see how many people are coming out today and we have beautiful weather for it. It’s a free activity. I mean, none of the stations are trying to sell you something. They’re just trying to teach you about trees, the environment and their relation with the theme of the year,” Brenden added.
