YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima Airport is set to undergo significant upgrades as part of a multi-phased project aimed at modernizing its facilities. Construction is expected to begin as early as next month, with some projects slated for completion by the end of the year.
The airport, originally built in the 1950s, is investing roughly $10 million into improvements, including a new roof, HVAC units, and an upgraded baggage claim. Robert Hodgman, the airport’s director, emphasized the necessity of these upgrades.
“We’ve had some leaks in the roof. Baggage claim – It’s a stainless-steel metal slide and two very large roll up doors. So, when the doors roll up the temperature from outside comes in. The slide itself, the way it works, the bags stack up two and three high. And it’s kind of an effort to be, especially if your bag is the one at the top to reach and pull your bag down. It certainly is not ADA friendly,” said Hodgman.
In addition to these improvements, the airport plans to add an overflow parking lot. Hodgman explained the need for this expansion as they work on increasing flight connections.
“We’re working with Alaska Airlines for a Portland connection with Horizon. And we’re also out we’ve reached out to SkyWest Delta for a connection to Salt Lake. So if we get both of those, we’ll be out of parking,” Hodgman stated.
Over the next several years, more than $60 million will be invested in various projects at the airport. Hodgman assured the public that these funds are specifically allocated for airport use and will not impact the city’s general fund.
“There’s a lot of concern within the community, justifiably so, about the city’s general fund. And, you know, my message there is none of these funds for the airport come from the general fund. They all are dedicated airport funds,” he said.
Future projects include solar panel parking covers, repairing a crosswind runway, baggage screening, a new ticketing area, downstairs restrooms, and a family lounge. Hodgman emphasized that all these efforts are aimed at improving the passenger experience. More information of these future projects can be found on their website.
