WEST RICHLAND, Wash. – As tumbleweed season arrives in the Tri-Cities, residents are reminded of their responsibility to manage their properties of tumbleweeds.
The West Richland Police Department issued a reminder about the importance of cleaning up tumbleweeds, which can create safety hazards on roads and sidewalks.
Rebecca Wood, a code compliance officer with the City of West Richland, reiterated that it’s a homeowner’s responsibility.
“As far as tumbleweeds go, if they’re small enough quantity to fit in garbage bags or anything like that, you’ll want to do that and leave it for BDI,” said Wood. “But if there are large amounts when we have a big storm or whatnot come through a windstorm, you’ll want to contact the city of West Richland.”
The City of Pasco also says it’s the homeowner’s responsibility to clean up any tumbleweeds on their property. However, if tumbleweeds blow onto their property that aren’t theirs, they can submit a complaint.
Similarly, the City of Kennewick also says it’s the homeowner’s responsibility, asking residents to dispose of them properly. To report tumbleweeds that have piled up that one does not own, the city asks residents to call code enforcement.
Before attempting to burn tumbleweeds, residents should check with the Benton Clean Air Agency by calling 509-783-6198.
