West Richland city councilmember and mayoral candidate arrested for DUI

WEST RICHLAND, Wash. – City councilmember and mayoral candidate May Hays was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on the evening of August 22.

Washington State Patrol confirmed Hays was booked into Benton County Jail after being processed.

“This past weekend I was visiting with a friend and on my way home when one of my tires blew out,” Hayes wrote on her campaign website for mayor of West Richland. “While I While I was pulled off to the side of the road, an officer stopped behind me to assist. The officer noticed that I had been drinking, and I was cited with a DUI.”

Hayes said that she was sharing her statement in the interest of transparency, and takes “full responsibility” for her “poor decision.”

The legal limit for blood alcohol content (BAC) when operating a non-commercial vehicle in Washington is 0.08%.
