HANFORD, Wash. – The U.S. Department of Energy Hanford Field Office and the Washington Department of Ecology will host a virtual public meeting about the proposed Contact-Handled Waste Processing Treatment and Storage Area, Hanford announced in a release.
The facility is designed to handle contact-handled transuranic waste and transuranic mixed waste. These materials would be treated and packaged for shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, Hanford said.
Additionally, mixed low-level radioactive waste would be processed at the facility for on-site disposal at Hanford.
The virtual meeting will focus on the siting, construction, and operation of the facility at the Central Waste Complex in the 200 West Area of the Hanford Site.
The meeting will take place on April 30 at 5:30 p.m.
Residents interested in learning more about the project and participating in the discussion can join the meeting remotely.
