A new report from the United Nations has declared that the world is now in “an era of global water bankruptcy.” The report highlights the severity of the situation, stating that terms like “water crisis” or “water stressed” do not adequately describe the magnitude of the problem.
The report reveals that the world is consuming more water resources than it receives, leading to a situation akin to being in debt. This is exacerbated by climate change, which intensifies heat and drought conditions.
The report calls for urgent actions to address this crisis. Suggested measures include transforming farming practices through more efficient irrigation, improving water monitoring, reducing pollution, and increasing protection for wetlands and groundwater.
These actions are deemed necessary by the UN to mitigate the irreversible consequences of the current global water situation.
