Trump administration cuts thousands of grants for communities battling substance abuse, Senator Murray responds

Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued a rebuke of the Trump administration’s decision to cut 2,800 grants for local communities to combat substance abuse and provide mental health services for addiction.

The cuts total up to $2 billion.

“So much for Make America Healthy Again and saving Americans from addiction and suicide—last night, the Trump administration decided to rip $2 billion away from communities across the country to tackle the fentanyl crisis and get people mental health care,” Murray said in a statement.

“You can’t cut off thousands of grants to tackle addiction and pardon a man convicted of mass-scale drug trafficking and pretend to be serious about dealing with this issue.”

Murray also said the decision would prevent people in Washington state and across the country from receiving “the care and treatment they are counting on—and that could save their life.”
