TRI CITIES, Wash – A devastating plane crash in North Carolina has taken the lives of NASCAR legend and Washington native Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, their two children, and longtime NASCAR community members Craig Wadsworth, Dennis Dutton and his son Jack.

The family was reportedly on a birthday trip to Sarasota, Florida, according to Biffle’s mother-in-law who spoke to People Magazine. It remains unclear who was piloting the plane when it went down.

Greg Biffle, recognized as one of the 75 greatest NASCAR drivers in 2023, left a lasting impact on the sport, the nation and his home state. He was known for his fearless driving and impressive achievements, including 19 NASCAR Cup Series wins, seven top ten finishes in the Daytona 500 and being named Rookie of the Year in 2001.

Greg Walden, who raced against Biffle in the 1990s, shared his memories of the NASCAR star.

“It’s numbing. You know, you still go to bed at night wondering why,” said Walden.

Walden described Biffle as a fierce competitor on the track.

“He was there to kick your butt. He was unbelievably talented, and he did it on his hard work and determination,” Walden said.

Off the track, Biffle was known for his selflessness. Walden recalled Biffle’s efforts during Hurricane Helene in North Carolina in 2024.

“Put together an all-out effort to get supplies, food and power back on, literally on their own money,” Walden said.

Walden emphasized the impact Biffle had on those around him.

“He was an example on how to lead your life. When you met those people, that is what you wanted your life to be like,” Walden said.

Biffle frequently visited the Tri-City Raceways, where Walden works in promotions. Walden says Biffle would always shows his dedication to the community.

“It’s like a homecoming because there’s so many people here that he knows,” Walden said.

Walden mentioned that while there are no specific plans yet, he believes the Tri-City Raceway will want to hold a memorial race to honor Greg Biffle and his family.
