Tri-Cities welcomes life-saving Watchman heart procedure

TRI-CITIES, Wash. – February is Heart Health Awareness Month, and a new heart procedure is now available in the Tri-Cities, making it more accessible for local residents.

The Watchman device is designed to prevent strokes in individuals with Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib) not caused by heart valve problems. Previously, patients had to travel to Seattle or Spokane to undergo this procedure.

Atrial Fibrillation significantly increases stroke risk. “One out of three people with Atrial Fibrillation will have a stroke in their lifetime,” said Dr. Abdelazim Hashim, a cardiologist at Kadlec.

The Watchman device is a crucial solution, especially for those who cannot take blood thinners due to bleeding issues. “Some people cannot take their blood thinners if they have bleeding problems,” Dr. Hashim said.

The procedure involves inserting the device through the femoral vein, placing it in the heart’s left upper chamber where blood clots commonly form. “This watchman procedure is the same day procedure. Patient will come. We will do it. They go home the same day,” Dr. Hashim said.

The Watchman offers a safer alternative by blocking the chamber where clots form, significantly reducing stroke risk. The new availability in the Tri-Cities means patients can avoid long drives to Seattle or Spokane.

“They’re really appreciative of the fact that we can do it here,” Dr. Hashim said, emphasizing the goal of providing essential services to the local community.

This new development is set to provide the Tri-Cities with vital heart care, enhancing patient convenience and safety.
